The Hangover follows three men after they wake up from a wild bachelor’s party in Las Vegas only to find the groom is missing. Not remembering anything from the night before, the men trace their steps in Sin City to find their friend. The film stars Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha. Released in 2009, The Hangover was directed by Todd Phillips and written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. Check out various screen facts below.
Stu’s Missing Incisor
Shortly after the men wake up in their Vegas penthouse, Stu, the dentist character played by Ed Helms, discovers his tooth is missing. No effects or prosthetics were used to film this scene. Helms’ adult incisor tooth never grew in and he has a removable fake one as a result. He simply took out his prosthetic to perform this part of the movie.
Alternative Music Video
Overall, The Hangover has a great soundtrack. One of the songs is “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” by Kanye West. The rap artist paid Zach Galifianakis to make an alternative music video for the song which is country/farm themed. For whatever reason, the music video didn’t get much traction (pun-intended!)
Inspired by Real Events
Tripp Vinson, a producer who worked on The Number 23 and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, hosted his bachelor’s party in Las Vegas. He went missing at some point in the night and woke up from a black out “in a strip club being threatened with a very, very large bill I was supposed to pay.”
Vinson is a friend of Chris Bender, an executive producer of The Hangover. Presumably, that’s how the idea for the movie began.
Mike Tyson’s Tiger
Another disastrous event in The Hangover is the discovery of a tiger in the bathroom of their hotel room. Later on in the film, the men discover the tiger is Mike Tyson’s, who is played by himself. In real life, Tyson owns seven tigers.
Initially, Tyson refused the role but changed his mind when he found out Todd Phillips, one of the producers, directed Old School, a film he liked. In addition, Tyson admitted the appearance funded his drug habit at the time and he was high while filming. Later, he stated working on the movie convinced him to alter his lifestyle.
Lindsay Lohan was originally offered the stripper role, Jade. After reading the script, she didn’t like it and believed the movie wouldn’t do well. Instead, Heather Graham was given the part. Lohan admitted she regretted her decision after the movie was released.
In fact, The Hangover was the highest grossing R-rated comedy in the U.S. to its release date. The script was also featured in the 2007 Blacklist, a list of the most likable, unmade scripts from the year.
Bradley Cooper & Ken Jeong
The Hangover is one of five films where both Bradley Cooper and Ken Jeong make an appearance together. They have also appeared in the two Hangover sequels, All About Steve and Avengers: Endgame.
It appears Cooper and Jeong’s relationship extends beyond the screen. While filming The Hangover, Jeong’s wife, Tran, was fighting breast cancer by undergoing chemotherapy which was obviously difficult for Ken to deal with. Since they were in Las Vegas to shoot, Cooper drove Ken to Los Angeles to be there with his wife. He also invited Ken and Tran to spend holidays with him and his family. “It got me through the most difficult period of my life,” Jeong said. Tran was declared cancer free after filming was complete.
